WorldStar judges representing the member packaging institutes of the World Packaging Organisation and the International Packaging Press Organisation awarded 190 prestigious WorldStar Awards to packages from 24 different countries at the judging held in Buenos Aires, Argentina during the 1999 Envase exhibition.
All packages entered into the WorldStar process have previously won national and, often, regional recognition in a packaging awards program. The 1999 winners were judged in 15 categories ranging from food to beverage to industrial and institutional packages.
"The entries were very competitive and extremely interesting this year," said Sergio Haberfeld of Dixie Toga S/A. "There were a number of new technologies that were identified and this is a major educational benefit for those who study the winning entries."
Haberfeld emphasized that WorldStar is not a competitive award system, at least in the sense that there is a first, second and third award system, but rather seeks to establish one positive standard for packages representing differing cultures and economies around the world.
The judges examine the various technical, marketing and environmental aspects of each package, consider the rationale and economics of production, then vote "yes" or "no" on each package entered.
The WorldStar winners will be formally recognized at a ceremony in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on May 28, 2000 during the Packaging Association of Canada's National Convention 2000. WPO will be publishing a booklet of the winners.
